Boos, cheers and merry panto mayhem

COMEDY with an underlying message is the trademark of the great playwright Willy Russell.

Stags and Hens is, like most of his plays, set in his home town of Liverpool during the late 1970s.  The entire action takes place in a nightclub toilet, during the hen and stag nights of Linda and husband-to-be Dave.

The young cast capture the girls' and their lads' roles perfectly, delivering the funpacked lines with style and squeezing every laugh from the brilliantly-written script.

As straight-talking Bernie, Sian Lamb leads the girls confidently, with some scene-stealing performances from Leigh Ryrie as the gauche Maureen who "just wants to have a good time".

Steve Hamer, meanwhile, rules the boys with his no-nonsense performance, while Robbie (Gary Donaldson) and mummy's boy Billy (Keith Davidson) provided many of the lighter moments in the little boy's room.  Stags and Hens is a great night's entertainment.
