With ‘D’ day celebrations just past, Attic Theatre’s production of “Oh What a Lovely War” was well timed. This was an excellent production which highlighted the enormity of loss of lives during world war I but also put across the humour of those men who gave their lives. The flow of poppies cascading onto the stage at the end of the show was a lovely theatrical moment and left you thinking about the sad waste of lives. Attic would like to congratulate Willma Gillanders for directing a wonderful show and also thank Luke McCullough, all cast and production team for their hardwork.
"Oh What a Lovely War" is surely the most poignant musical ever written. Its theme is the gross folly of World War I, when the hugely tragic waste of human life reached unimaginable proportions and caused untold suffering across Europe. That this is played out against a background of an end of pier show complete with Pierrots, dancing girls, bawdy humour and the often raucous songs of the conflict makes for a surreal and riveting production.
Even so the wit, pragmatism, comradeship, and unremitting courage of the ‘ordinary’ men in the trenches soars above the charnel house horror of their surroundings and nothing can hide the magnitude of the human spirit which underpins this achingly sad but somehow uplifting piece. Songs included are "Keep the home fires burning", "It’s a long way to Tipperary" and "Goodbye-ee". |
