Gypsy Debbie pulls it off

Everything is coming up roses for Debbie Boyd in the title role of Attic Theatre’s production of Gypsy, which opened at Aberdeen Arts Centre last night. The story of the legendary stripper Gypsy Rose Lee is told in a comfortingly traditional style. After a lifetime being driven by her stage-struck mother, superbly played by Jill Hay, dowdy Louise Rose learns a new set of tricks from three strippers and the bland wall-flower blossoms into a ravishing rose.

Debbie pulls this off with immense subtlety and skill while the panoply of Variety Hall spins around her. Dave Fearns turns in a heart warming performance as good natured agent Herbie. Anthea Robertson directs a large exuberant cast while Ken McLeod drives his orchestra through an outstanding score. Wonderful songs and hilarious routines make Gypsy a must.
