A funny thing happened last night at Aberdeen Arts Centre… The audience were rendered helpless with laughter over a Roman TRAGEDY!
Once again, Attic Theatre has come up trumps in bringing a new musical to Aberdeen's stage. Stephen Sondheim's classic – with songs from the very familiar Comedy Tonight to the less-known but equally well-staged Everybody Ought To Have A Maid and Lovely – has many high points.
I won't try to tell you the story - as a farce, it's fairly complex. Suffice to say that for fun (and raunchiness) you'll get no better. As the slaves Pseudolus and Hysterium, Brian Staines and Frank Campbell respectively stole the show – their comedy skills never cease to amaze. Graeme Wilson, although his role was small, made a big impact with some great one-liners, while Debbie Boyd was excellent as the bimbo Virgin, Philia – one reservation, through, why can't a brunette play a bimbo for once? The Courtesans brought many of the male audience out in a cold sweat with their contribution of whip-wielding pelvic thrusts, while some excellent cameos confirmed what we've always suspected – there is a huge amount of talent in Attic Theatre.
This musical version of Up Pompeii is too funny to miss - comedy tonight! The show runs at 7.30pm until Saturday.
